Starting vacation, so what better than compile a fresh version of Emacs (31.0.50) on my Mac like I would not have better things to do. Now this time I compiled Emacs using native compilation.
Also had to look into aspell and set the LANG variable, as the default language on my system now changed (after OS update?) and defaults to the language that corresponds to my physical location, which is not the language i use.
