If you _insist_ on using HTML terminology, then you can _start_ the image description with a sentence obeying the rules for the HTML alt atribute. Then, in the following paragraphs, apply the rules for the "longdesc" attribute.
Of course it's perfectly okay to omit the long description if it's too burdensome for whatever reason. But stop telling people it's not allowed. Don't let anybody tell you it's not allowed.
