There’s a certain kind of person who believes if they can just state a rule strictly enough, with enough bluster and faux authority, everyone will have no choice but to melt into compliance.
But controlling others is a monkey’s paw. And the whole point of the monkey’s paw is there’s no way to outsmart it, no amount of lawyering or posturing that will compel it to use its powers for good.
The incentives model is better, but still incomplete. The real solution is to connect with people’s values.
