I kinda found a way to cut through this Gordian knot.
I remembered that, when I was just starting with Rails (before transactional tests were honed), database truncation was popular (basically, you clean up the tables after each test).
I tried it with #SQLAlchemy and this works. No need to monkey patch anything, just run `TRUNCATE` in a fixture.
