A neighbor told me her 10yo grandchild's doctor had just advised the family to make sure they enjoy every single day they still have with that child. That women's job is palliative care, but this broke through her professionalism, of course.
What could you possibly say to people bringing such news? I dunno. I just hugged her wordlessly, and it seems this was well received. (Until then, we've never even shaken hands.)
It's been several days but, having kids of my own, I think of this constantly.
