They essentially still fear retaliation from those caregivers or in-groups, and that fear is projected onto the communicator of those conflicting beliefs.
As if the communicator is the threat they grew up with.
Even if there is nothing to fear anymore, the emotional feedback mechanism is still present subconsciously.
There are additional layers of influence, such as modeling where the intolerance is imprinted early on. Or, a need to be accepted and validated by the caregivers or in-groups.
