Anyone who is a threat to their control is the subject of attack. A framing of the target as themselves a threat.
Pay close attention to the claims. Verify evidence. Do not accept testimony alone. Anyone can lie, even your best friends. They'll chalk it up as "doing what's best" for you and this state, when really it's to preserve their control and further their ideologies.
The easiest way to rationalize with a challenge is to claim the challenger is crazy. It allows them to dismiss it.
