_The Evening Post_, 8 July 1924:
          PRICE OF A SHAVE
REPORTED REDUCTION IN
        CHRISTCHURCH.

                  DUNEDIN, This Day.
It is reported from Christchurch that some of the there have reduced the price of from ninepence to sixpence [from ca. $4.50 to $3.00 today]. Inquiries in Dunedin hairdressing saloons reveal no corresponding breakaway.… “I have not noticed any particular falling off in customers lately. Some men have taken to safety , and maybe their number is increased since the razor makers started to push their goods in the market, but our population is increasing, and our businesses are not in peril by any means. One thing I could notice was that the influenza epidemic of 1918 made a difference. Shaving saloons were then compulsorily closed for three weeks. That break caused quite a lot of men to learn to shave themselves, and some I have never seen again. Fresh faces take the place of all who disappear.”

Colour photo: Durham Duplex Safety Razor. Razor dated 1920s–1930s. Description: This razor was manufactured by the Durham Razor Company Inc. This innovative razor was considered to be a major advancement in shaving especially in comparison to the traditional cut throat razor. The Durham double edge steel razor blade could be resharpened on a leather strop almost indefinitely, but eventually they could be disposed of and replaced without needing a new handle – offering both a considerable saving and a safe way to shave.
