The first Olympic road cycyling event is now underway, the women's time trial.
It shows one of the best things about cycling coverage and the reason we need more cycling events around the world.
This is one of the few events that actually takes place on the streets of Paris, not in some insulated stadium/arena. So we get to see what Paris (OK probably a bit cleaned up) really looks like. Anyone in the vicinity can come out to watch, so the people by the side of the road are "ordinary" people, not VIPs who paid up years ago to get seats.
Cycling is always like this. We get to see every day scenes of every day people in countries (mostly in Europe, but maybe someday all over the world). More Americans need to see what Europe really looks like. We also need to see what Asia and Africa really look like. Which actually the Olympics is more likely to show than "regular" cycling events.
In my mind, road cycling shows the best of the Olympic spirit.
