"Still Life with a Carafe, Flowers, and Fruit," Henri Fantin-Latour, 1865.
Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was a contemporary of the Impressionists, and was friends with some of them, but never adopted the style. However, he was known for his still lifes, at a time when other Realists were being very academic and doing historical, religious, and allegorical works. His devotion to still lifes was gently rebellious, but also the best way of demonstrating his ability at rendering color and texture.
Later in his career, he was noted for portraits, especially group portraits of various artists and authors of the time. He also took an interest in photography, and had an extensive collection of early erotic photos. (Oh my!)

A Realist still life. On a table with a white cover is a plate of peaches, with one having rolled onto the cloth. To our right is another plate with a cantaloupe, with a few sections taken out, showing orange flesh. Behind the peaches is a carafe of red wine; behind the cantaloupe is a vase of flowers.
