_The Evening Post_, 7 September 1923:
THORNDON ESPLANADE TO GO
Authority was given the City Solicitor, Mr J. O’Shea, by the City Council last evening to negotiate with the Railway Department and the Harbour Board with reference to compensation to the council for the land taken by those bodies along the . The Mayor, Mr R. A. Wright, stated this morning that the esplanade had already been formally taken over as being a part of the land required for the new railway yard and harbour-front purposes, but it was not likely that it would be devoted to such purposes for some time to come. The Act gave those bodies the right to acquire land where it was necessary for the development of a scheme such as that proposed for Thorndon, and made provision that the amount of compensation to be paid should be settled by arbitration.

Black-and-white photo: Thorndon Esplanade, Wellington. ca. 1910. Photographer unidentified. Description: Looking down the esplanade, which is edged with shrubs. A young girl stands in the middle of the path mid-distance; closer and to the right someone sits on a seat next to a pram and probably holding a baby (their image is blurred). More seats with people sitting on them are visible further down the right side of the esplanade. The public baths with their distinctive domes are to the left in the middle distance. In the far distance is Mount Victoria. Citation: Ref: 1/2-106870-F. Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand. https://natlib.govt.nz/records/23203459
