GROWTH IN NEW ZEALAND
A SIMPLE REMEDY
HEALTH DEPARTMENT’S
CAMPAIGN.
Recently “The Post” has published several articles [about] the prevalence of in New Zealand and the special measures that are being taken by the Department of Health…. Professor Hercus, of the Medical School of Otago, … is carrying out investigations into the content of soil and vegetables in various parts of New Zealand.… valuable information … indicating the districts [to] be concentrated upon for … prophylactic measures.
The School Medical Service of the Health Department is this year undertaking the administration of minimal doses of iodine preparations to school children in specially selected areas. This work, which has been under way for two or three years, has produced satisfactory and encouraging results. Lately, in the food and drugs regulations recognition was made of the fact that the addition of iodine to common salt is a most useful means of prophylaxis…. Colour photo: Bag, 5lb Selva Iodised Table Salt. Manufactured 1930s. Description: A white bag with red and green printing. It was manufactured by the New Cheshire Salt Works in Northwich, England, and sold in Southland A1 Stores. The bag was probably imported before the establishment of New Zealand salt works in the 1940s. Background: Before the 1920s, many New Zealanders suffered from goitre as a result of iodine deficiency. This deficiency also caused mental disabilities in young children. In 1924, the New Zealand government established an initiative to add iodine to table salt. This public health action virtually eradicated goitre by the 1950s.
