On reading Adam Hochschild's "King Leopold's Ghost":

I didn't know the crimes had been forgotten after a big humanitarian campaign in early 20th century until this book came out 25 years ago.

It's incredible how much harm a single individual can do if he's rich, powerful, highly intelligent, ambitious and ruthless. Leopold never even set foot to the continent where he was responsible for millions of deaths, probably more than people living in Belgium back then.

The most disturbing chapter is at the end: The campaign against Belgian Congo was successful -- and still the situation hardly improved. And it seems the other colonial powers weren't really better than Leopold. Why did the outrage focus on his regime? Was he just an easy target -- or actually the worst of the bunch?

Also fascinating: How Leopold II manipulated people and media and served them stories they wanted to be true. 130 years later and we have learned nothing in this field.

And of course: There are always and everywhere people willing to participate in mass murder if they get the right mix of incentive and pressure.
