Status: I often fall into research rabbit holes. My mother and her parents spoke excellent Chinese, mine is terrible. But I do speak Japanese - which they didn't speak.
So I ran across this compound: 天井 == Tiānjǐng == sky well . Consider a home, built around an indoor floor space, open to the sky, often including a garden.
But Japanese has a similar format naka-niwa (中庭) or tsubo-niwa (坪庭).
But are they the same? The rabbit hole is soooo inviting, heh.
