Akhenaten, originally Amenhotep IV, became pharaoh around 1352 BC and introduced a monotheistic religion centered on Aten, the sun disc. He changed his name to Akhenaten (“servant of Aten”) and promoted Aten above other gods, though he didn’t entirely abolish traditional polytheism. After his death, his reforms were mostly undone, and his monuments were defaced, but his influence persisted in Egyptian history.
