It's also important to stress that the bridge-bypassing detour for cars is not that long – yet the congestion persists. Likely because the detour can't accommodate the amount of cars directed through it. On the whole, it's a system that doesn't really scale well to anything other than huge multi-lane roads.
On the other hand, comparable detours are an everyday thing for cyclists and pedestrians, with very little hassle (apart from frustration).
