In the Old Town on Hvar island, Croatia, a Roman mosaic dating to 2nd Century AD, was discovered beneath a narrow street during construction in 1923. The mosaic, part of a luxurious Roman villa, was found two feet below street level. To protect it from water damage, it was reburied with slabs. Rising sea levels and ambient moisture now threaten the site, which is no longer dry land.
