A Bronze Sri Lankan Female Deity (8th Century AD), possibly Tārā. She has high tubular coiffure held in place by medallion flanked by water creatures which was probably set with stones, as were eyes.
The earlobes are elongated and proper right hand is in varadamudrā (gesture of giving), while left hand in katakahastamudrā (hand pose wherein tips of fingers are applied to the thumb so as to form a ring).
The object (H: 143cm) was bought by the British Museum in 1830 from Sir Robert Brownrigg.
