The obelisk at the heart of St. Peter's Square in the Vatican is an ancient Egyptian artifact dating back 4,000 years. It was originally erected in Heliopolis around 1835 BC.
Emperor Caligula brought it to Rome in 37 AD and placed it at the center of what would later become the Circus of Nero. Even after the circus fell into ruin, it remained in this position for over 1,000 years.
In 16th Century AD, it was moved next to St. Peter's Basilica, at Rotonda di Sant'Andrea.
