Sticking to stable reduces any effort related to OS maintenance. I'd estimate I save at least a few hours a month not reading about updates and managing them that I did on Windows, simply to have the machine continue to function.
Virtual machines add a layer of security, for trying out any programs you have doubts about for example, on Linux too.
