July 3, 1983, 41 years ago today: I descended steeply into McCormick Gap, crossed Skyline Drive, and began to climb the next mountain. Most of the trail route from the gap onward was devoid of trees. The AT followed the ridgeline of Bear Den Mountain to a flat, rocky meadow. The summit area was crowned with a cluster of equipment buildings and storage sheds and bristled with several police radio towers.

Beneath a very pale blue and hazy white sky we are high up a mountainside looking out over an overgrown field of tall grass and leafy shrubs running down towards a deep gap below. Far to our right, past a grove of trees, the overgrown mountainside gives way to recently grazed or mown fields that continue downhill to the gap. A two-lane road runs through the gap with a small parking area where the trail crosses it. Beyond the gap the trail climbs another mountain, initially through a large meadow. Most of that mountain is wooded, although there are a few smaller fields along the crest.
