July 9, 1983, 41 years ago today: One nice feature of hiking the Appalachian Trail is that you get to see the world — Damascus (Virginia), Glasgow (Virginia), Duncannon (Pennsylvania), Manchester (Vermont), Berlin (New Hampshire)… Today, in Ashby Gap, I finally got to see Paris. It was not quite as I had expected, and I could not seem to locate the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre.

An intensely green forest of tall trees surround a small clearing lushly carpeted with ferns. The late afternoon sun is low above the far horizon, shining through the leafy branches of the trees and casting long shadows across the ferns. Through the canopy there are glimpses of a soft blue sky.
