From the Telugu-English dictionary, compiled by C.P. Brown (and later extended by others), the word "kamala", which originates from Sanskrit, is another name for Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, while the word "kamalamu" means lotus. Kamala Harris' mom is from a South Indian state where Tamil, a close cousin, is spoken.
In Telugu, the pronunciation is ka-ma-la, not kaa-ma-la or ka-maa-la, and I suspect that's true in Tamil as well. But, the correct way is whatever she goes by.
