Checking my watch and guidebook, I discovered that my miles of side trips had caused me to travel less than five book miles of the Appalachian Trail in five hours. That was okay, because no more excursions were planned for today.
A summery day. A clear but very hazy soft blue sky. A scrub-grown rocky prominence above the rest of the ridge crest. Ahead that crest ascends a pair of higher knobs, with slopes covered with grass, smaller rock outcrops and a generous scattering of fir trees and shrubs. Swaths of fir forest cover parts of each knob's crest.
