Hannegan pass hike cont'd. More meadow plants. Photos 1 & 2: scarlet paintbrush (Castilleja coccinea) isn't plentiful here, sadly; it's my favorite. Photo 3: one of our native sedums on a boulder, look at that exquisite texture. Photo 4: you know you're in old growth when you see this creeping raspberry, Rubus pedatus. Loves mossy shade under old trees; in big patches like this it makes the most perfect carpet.

Closer view of the paintbrush flower. Each long stem has a single flower on its end that appears to have been dipped in red paint, thus the name.

Very close view of a very short plant growing out of a dark rough boulder. It is a succulent with fleshy leaves that grow in tiny cabbage like rosettes. Some have long thin flower stems extending up out of the photo.

A shady view of a mossy bank covered in a small creeping plant. Leaves occur in groups of five in a pentagonal pattern; each is bluntly toothed. The overall effect is a bit like a quilt with a pentagon pattern.
