Moby-Dick (The Whale) did not do well when first published in 1851. It had mixed reviews and did not find much of an audience.
Herman Melville lived 40 more years not really recognized as a writer. When he died in 1891, Moby-Dick was out of print.
The novel was rediscovered in the 1920s.
