Hard to convey what a terrific book this is. Orwell's writing is, as always, clear and fearless. He's as hard on himself as he is on anyone else, and digs deep into the class structure of English life in the Great Depression. When he writes about the working class he's writing about actual people whom he has lived among, and it shows.

Cover of a paperback edition of the subject book, with the title set over a black-and-white picture of two men sitting by a roadway, presumably coal miners, black with coal dust.
