After the shelter, the Appalachian Trail ascended Bear Mountain, the first 2000-foot summit over which the trail actually passed since Shenandoah National Park. The climb was very rugged, but the trail ascended through low, scrubby pines past naked rock ledges with constant views to the south, east, and west. Nice views always make a difficult climb seem easier.
We are standing atop cliffs of reddish gray rock looking down into a sun-drenched valley hundreds of feet below. The valley floor is relatively flat, although wooded hills rise in the distance along the horizon. Most of the valley floor is wooded, too, but a few miles distant there are a few green fields, some houses and a small pond visible. The sky is bright and soft blue with gauzy, hazy clouds.
