At Ness of Brodgar, the structures are large, many and varied. Photo shows some of the best quality work, other areas had no foundation and have sunk and collapsed. Building went on for '000s of years.
Stone was recycled into new structures, buildings collapsed and were replaced. They had stone flag roofs (as my house does) and had interior features such as stone 'skirting boards' and smooth interior stone panels. Stone had colour applied and images carved into surfaces. Amazing. #Archaeology
A view of a corner of an excavated area at the Ness of Brodgar archaeological dig. There is grass at ground level then soil and massive stone slabs as foundations. On these is a dry stone wall that is very well constructed, with a gentle curve along it's length. Within the wall is a jumble of other stones and people sifting through the soil around the stones. A blue rope prevents public access.
