We tend to revere the work of long dead craftsmen, often with a rosy tinge. However, this is some of the worst work I have ever seen. Running joints almost from top to bottom and two adjacent.

On right, stones are falling out because they are not held by the correct method of staggering the joints with two stones on one and one on two. I'm trying to date these walls and I suspect a lot of itinerant labour paid by the yard. Nobody to see this side. They should have been told to do it again.

The rear face of a dry stone wall, a few metres from the bank of a stream. The stones are mostly rounded by action of water and are green with algae as they are under trees. There are three 'running joints' visible. Two together on left and another on the point of collapse less than a metre to the right.
