Another element to this: In the past 15 years newsrooms have grown accustomed to “reporting” on online conversations that achieve critical mass.
How could you blame them? It’s easy, cheap, fast. Just copy embed codes, write transitions and count those clicks!
So now there’s this habit, this need to talk about an element of the zeitgeist, lest they get left behind on the secondary memes.
It’s modern political cartooning.
