There was a rise of private schools in the state during this era known as segregation academies. Many white families of means sent their children to these.
The rhetoric of “school choice” / “parental choice” echoes that time and place. Only instead of “we will bus your children to the neighborhood school of your choice” (which fell to black children to bear the commute and the orientation to an unfamiliar neighborhood) … it is, we will subsidize the segregation academy of your choice.
