I doubt that Mattel funded anything, but MS was absolutely deeply involving software and hardware companies during the development of XP. Barbie (and Doom, Quake, etc.) were all targeted as "must run" applications prior to RTM, with Barbie specifically coming up as a topic with Beta Testers with regards to stability and performance.
It was also probably the last O/S done by MS where a select group of mainstream users were an integral part of the development program.
