The number of memories of the past are limited, and when Carel Jozeph Grips (1825-1920) made paintings in the style of the 1600s he often reused the same objects in several places.
In this Waiting for a Loved One he not only has placed the same 1631 Missale Romanum on the floor as in some other paintings, but it is opened on the page that seems to be his favourite, the Epiphany with the visit of the three Magi.
