Drought has vastly improved in the Southeast following heavy precipitation across the region last week. Parts of Alabama, North Carolina, southern Georgia and northern Florida reported 2 to 8 inches of rainfall last week – 300% to 600% above normal for those areas. Abnormal dryness and drought now cover 63.27% of the region, down from 81.96% last week.

Hot Topic July 25, 2024. Climate focus: the Southeast. Improvements to abnormal dryness and drought occurred across the Southeast this week. Abnormal dryness or worse improved from 81.96% to 63.27%. Moderate drought or worse dropped from 45.98% to 33.32%, while severe drought or worse fell from 18.2% to 11.96%. Extreme drought also eased from 3.08% to 2.73%.
