Portugal is now Western Europe's poorest country by basically every measure -- still rich by global standards but noticeably poor-ish by European ones -- and it's amazing to think that it was once so rich.
Lisbon was the third-biggest port in Europe before the 1755 earthquake (after London and Amsterdam). It was home to the largest collection of books and manuscripts on the continent and one of the largest in the world. It was phenomenally wealthy.
