"July 30, 1864 - Soldiers who were coal miners in civilian life dug a tunnel beneath the Southern defensive line and then rigged thousands of pounds of powder. At sunrise they exploded the powder, and the sky filled with earth, stones, rifles, timbers—arms and legs. The blast opened a two-hundred foot hole in the rebel line. Three Union divisions poured in but became easy targets for Confederates. The Union's attempt to break the Confederate lines at Petersburg failed.
