You can make anything sound scary. ~250,000 people drown every year, but we’re not banning water. No one is proposing to turn the ocean into pure sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
The LOC-NESS experiment will use 20 tonnes of NaOH for the 1st phase and 200 tonnes in the 2nd phase. For comparison, in the US in 2019, more than 180,000 tonnes of NaOH were added to drinking water to increase the pH to control toxic heavy metals. Context matters. 3/n
