The Crowdstrike thing is what happens when the entire OS is your "kernel". Amazed Linux hasn't been hit by something similar yet. Apple too.
Its what happens when you let drivers into your kernel. The kernel should be as small as possible, and everything else should be a restart able process that can't crash the whole system.
MINIX has it right but they're too small to care, QNX had it right but they've retreated into or relevance.
