My sister tells me that there's a huge fire in the woods up the gorge at the far end of Ribeira Brava in Madeira and that there's ash falling on everything and smoke in the air. People have been evacuated from the vicinity. It's thought to have been set off by the fireworks for the recent celebration of the Annonciation of Mary. Apparently people make homemade flash/bang fireworks...gawd awmighty. Every religious fête they let off lots of fireworks, so the risk remains.
