Of course, most of that wealth came from colonies overseas and much of it was generated by enslaved people working on the sugar and cotton plantations in Maranhão and in the gold mines in Minas Gerais. Portugal didn't have a particularly dynamic economy itself. But Lisbon was once the biggest city on the Iberian Peninsula. It was richer than Rome.
