Japanese-era postcard showing the main peak of Mount Niitaka (present-day Yushan). The English-language caption (“Mount-Morion’) appears to be an mis-transcription of the old English name “Mount Morrison”.
The Japanese named the mountain Niitaka or “new high mountain” because it was taller than Mount Fuji and so, with the ceding of Taiwan to Japan in 1895, became Japan’s new tallest mountain.
