I had been reading https://wayland-book.com/protocol-design/wire-protocol.html which describes new_id as simply a "32-bit object ID which allocates that object when received"
But https://wayland.freedesktop.org/docs/html/ch04.html#sect-Protocol-Wire-Format actually defines new_id as:
The 32-bit object ID. Generally, the interface used for the new object is inferred from the xml, but in the case where it's not specified, a new_id is preceded by a string specifying the interface name, and a uint specifying the version.
