Today’s Life Hack may seem ultra-serious by comparison, but as someone who has been in media since 1994 (and experienced the infancy of the internet), I believe it’s important to share. In the age of social media, disinformation is an act of war. Pretty strident comment, but it’s true. Disinformation (and its cousin, Misinformation) is a tactic or methodology related to “Full Spectrum Dominance” and is meant to sow discord, disunion, confusion and hamper morale, if not actively harm others. If you are on social media, you are considered a distribution channel. While you may see yourself as someone who just likes to share funny memes, cat pictures and recipes for cheese dip, bad actors across the globe view you as a transmission device. Treat that with the respect it warrants. If the WWII United States War Advertising Council’s idiom “Loose lips sink ships” could be applied in today’s context, it may have read, “Share sparingly and warily.” • Vet your sources • Amplify truth, not rumor • Check images for accuracy
