Religion is a useful tool for the far right because most white Christians are already comfortable being hypocrites and relying on cheap aphorisms and fake Christian "love" with which to hide their bigotry and authoritarian impulses. They don't even have to have policy beliefs or know what they're voting for; they'll follow the charismatic church leader off a cliff because it's "god's will."
