Today's historic #photo of the day: Exactly 37 years ago, and just days before the line's closure for conversion to a tramway, a 4-car 'Grey Ghost' Harris #train on a St Kilda to Flinders Street trip passes an upper quadrant automatic semaphore signal near Albert Park, Vic, July 26 1987
Albert Park was 2.4km from Flinders Street on the broad gauge St Kilda railway. Opened in 1857 by the Melbourne & Hobson's Bay Railway Co, the 4.5km 1600mm gauge line was one of Australia's first public railways
Taken from a low angle at the side of a railway track, we are looking up towards a multiple unit electric train running along the track. The front of the train, which is painted in a light grey colour with a band of green and yellow diagonal stripes below the drivers window, is illuminated by bright winter sun, and the near side of the train is unlit. The destination roll in the front centre of the train is displaying St Kilda in white letters on black. Just to the right of the train stands a signal post supporting an upper quadrant automatic semaphore signal displaying caution aspect with the arm at 45 degrees. The background of the shot is filled with the deep blue sky of a clear winter's day.
