In case you're wondering what was damaged in the #French #rail infrastructure attacks:
It appears the aim was to disrupt the signalling system for some days. Not, as some on Mastodon suggest, to derail trains & murder peeps.
A lot of communication is done via optic cables. Multiple individual cables are contained in rubber tubes. Once you cut & burn these it takes time to fix it.
Naturally on railroads these cables are fairly accessible. Often via concrete ditches along the many km of track.
