Parametricity/The Abstraction Theorem for System F is perhaps the first example for (1): Given a well-typed term and a relation R on base types, you get to lift it automatically through the System F type formers.
This yields an immensely useful ind. principle, because you don't need to argue over the potentially huge *definition* of the thing typable in System F. Rather you prove that the operations accessible to your defn (as params) preserve R and get that your defn preserves R for free.
