Bird drama. A strong storm blew through today while we were away from home. Two hours later, when we returned home, a male cardinal was in the redbud tree chirping loudly. The female was also nearby.
'
Turns out, the storm had blown their hatchlings from the nest. We found two alive (and one dead), and returned them to the nest in a river birch some 30 feet away. The cardinal pair seems to have resumed feeding the babies.
A bright red male Northern Cardinal amidst the green leaves of the redbud tree. The bird seems to have something in its mouth. Water droplets are still visible on the leaves from the earlier rainstorm.
Two young birds in a nest in a river birch. The birds have some blueish-gray feathers. The third hatchling that didn't live must have hatched a few days later then these and had almost no feathers.
