Today's historic #photo of the day: bogie #tram no 25 running a 'Talking Tram' tour on a centre-of-road single track section passes in front of the Sacred Heart Cathedral with its then comparatively newly completed spire in High Street, Bendigo, Vic, May 31 1987.
Bendigo, about 160km north of Melbourne, was blessed with a tramway network from 1890 when a short-lived battery tramway opened. The line was converted to steam in 1892 and then expanded and converted to electric operation in 1903.
On a dull day we see a brown and cream liveried dropcentre bogie tram with a penny farthing wheelset beneath each end saloon and four openings in the dropcentre section runs left to right along a centre of road track with the leftmost trolley pole raised to the overhead wire. In the background on a hill directly behind the tram is a large gothic style cathedral of mid grey coloured stone with a main spire of notably lighter coloured stone betraying it as a relatively newer addition.
